London – Morocco’s immigration policy and its efforts to fight illegal immigration were highlighted on Monday during an international conference on asylum and immigration held at the UK Parliament in London.
Morocco was represented at the event by President of the committee in charge of domestic, decentralization and infrastructure at the House of Representatives, Ahmed Touhami who told MAP that Morocco is not only a transit country for immigrants but is also becoming a host country. Touhami shed light on considerable efforts undertaken by Morocco to combat illegal immigration, calling, in this regard, upon Europe for further assistance.
He said immigration policy should not be based only on a security approach, stressing the need for a policy that takes human development into account.
In this connection, Touhami said that Morocco¹s large scale anti-poverty programme, the National Initiative for Human Development (INDH), may stand as a model for other countries to follow as it enabled the launch of revenue generating activities that led many illegal immigration candidates to stay in their regions.
