Grain exports from the French port of Rouen, Europe’s biggest cereal-shipping hub, climbed 35 percent in the latest week on increasing demand for wheat.
Cargoes rose to 169,497 metric tons between Aug. 23 and Aug. 29 from 125,310 tons a week earlier, the Seine River port wrote in an e-mailed report today.
Shipments in the week included 159,450 tons of wheat, up from 109,215 a week earlier, with Algeria and Cuba as the biggest destinations. Feed barley exports totaled 10,047 tons, up from 6,945 tons a week earlier.
Rouen accounted for 41 percent of France’s grain exports by sea in 2010-11, ahead of La Pallice on the Bay of Biscay, with a share of 17 percent, and Dunkirk on the North Sea, at 11 percent of the total, according to port figures.
