Morocco plans to send “substantial humanitarian aid” to help Jordan handle the influx of Syrian refugees fleeing the deadly unrest in their country, official sources in Rabat said on Friday.

King Mohammad VI has decided to dispatch an “expert Moroccan mission equipped with substantial logistical and humanitarian aid,” notably food, tents and medical supplies, the palace said in a statement.

Specialist doctors will accompany the relief mission, which the kingdom will provide with its own airplanes, according to a government source.

Jordan is currently hosting more than 145,000 people who have fled the 16-month conflict in neighboring Syria, which activists say has claimed more than 20,000 lives.

The Moroccan monarch and his Jordanian counterpart, King Abdullah II, spoke by phone on Friday, with Mohammad VI expressing his country’s “full solidarity” with Jordan in dealing with the refugee crisis, the palace said.
