Stansted’s first charter flights to Agadir in Morocco are being added by Thomson and First Choice for summer 2013.

The Tui Travel brands are to also operate a service to Gran Canaria year-round with the addition of summer departures.

The move is part of the UK’s largest operator’s strategy to expand from regional airports.

Packages will offer stays at Thomson’s Platinum Riu Palace Agadir, Thomson adults-only Couples’ Hotel Suite Princess in Gran Canaria, and the Thomson Family Resort Hotel Orquidea in Gran Canaria’s Bahia Feliz.

Airport negotiations manager Paul Cooper said: “Increasing our capacity and introducing these new routes at Stansted airport demonstrates our continued commitment to Essex and we are confident these destinations will prove popular with our customers.

“The Agadir flight will provide a third UK gateway to the Moroccan beach resort, in addition to our Gatwick and Manchester flights.”

The airport’s commercial director Jonathan Crick added: “Thomson and First Choice operate very successful connections from Stansted and the announcement that they will expand flight operations next summer showcases the growing popularity of Stansted as a gateway for leisure travel.

“We are proud to offer more direct flight connections across Europe than any other UK airport and look forward to supporting Thomson and First Choice as they develop new services here.”
