Madrid – The Spanish government said Wednesday that the agricultural agreement between the EU and Morocco is “balanced and advantageous” for both parties.
The agricultural agreement concluded between the EU and Morocco “is balanced. Just as it is beneficial to both parties,” said Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Miguel Arias Canete.
The minister, who appeared before the Committee on Agriculture of the Spanish Congress of Deputies (lower house of Parliament), said that liberalization of agricultural trade with Morocco was “progressive.”
He also said his government does not share the catastrophic scenarios of some Spanish agricultural associations which claim that the EU-Morocco Agreement on Agriculture would be prejudicial to their interests.
He listed, in this context, the benefits of this agreement for the Spanish foreign trade, as it ensures greater openness of the Moroccan market for Spanish products.
The Morocco-EU agriculture Free Trade Agreement, adopted in February by the European Parliament, will allow substantial economic and tax gain for both parties due to the enlargement of quotas and the application of preferential import duties.
Its adoption, after tough negotiations, was hailed by the European Union which said the deal opens “new phase” in relations between the two parties.
