London – Human rights organization Amnesty International (AI) blasted over the impunity prevailing in the polisario-run Tindouf camps, in the Algerian territory.

“The Polisario Front took no measures to end impunity for those accused of committing human rights abuses in the 1970s and 1980s at the Tindouf camps controlled by the Polisario Front in Algeria’s Mhiriz region,” AI said in its yearly report on the state of the world’s human rights.

The problem of human rights abuses has been going on for many years, Amnesty International’s Director for Middle East and North Africa Philip Luther said on the sidelines of the presentation, on Wednesday in London, of the organization’s 2012 report.

He underlined the difficulties which AI faces mainly in relation with registration in the said camps.

Luther noted that human rights organizations called for conducting a headcount of populations living in these camps to make sure that the humanitarian aid is really dispatched to them.

AI recalled in its report that “in October, three aid workers – an Italian woman, a Spanish woman and a Spanish man – were abducted by an armed group from a Polisario-run refugee camp. They had not been released by the end of 2011.”
