Morocco on Wednesday expressed ‘deep concern’ about the events in Syria and called on all parties concerned to exercise restraint and wisdom. ‘The kingdom of Morocco, whose traditional position is not to interfere with the internal affairs of other countries, expresses (today) its grave concern over the painful events shaking Syria,’ a statement by the ministry of foreign affairs said.

It said these events were marked by ‘an exacerbation of tension and a resurgence of violence and the killing of several people, particularly among the civilian population’.

Rabat expressed the hope that ‘the sister Syrian people will be able to find the concrete and credible path leading to its legitimate aspirations of democracy, away from any excessive resort to violence or repression’.

This is the first reaction of the Moroccan kingdom since the outbreak last March of events in Syria where security forces are reported to have killed 2,000 people, according to human rights organisations.

Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain have already recalled their ambassadors from Damascus for ‘consultation’ in protest against the repression of civilian populations.
