Rabat – Morocco is “on the right track” in democracy and can “serve as a model for other countries,” said Wednesday in Rabat Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjorn Jagland, on a working visit to the Kingdom.
“Morocco has undertaken a number of important reforms that have led to the adoption of a new constitution and the holding of elections recently. This is a clear sign that it is on the right track and can serve as an example for other countries,” said Thorbjorn Jagland who was speaking at a press briefing after a meeting with Foreign Minister Saad Dine El Otmani.
The visit of the delegation of the Council of Europe to Morocco aims “to define a working program with the South of the Mediterranean, North Africa and Central Asia,” said the European official.
“We are finalizing the process to develop these programs, including cooperation with Morocco, Tunisia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Palestine, which allows us to offer our expertise, which is internationally recognized, notably in constitutional, legislative matters and the building of democratic institutions,” he said.
He stressed the importance of relations between Morocco and his organization, recalling that Morocco is part of the Venice Commission and the Pompidou Group and has joined several conventions the Council.
