Washington – The Moroccan autonomy proposal in the Sahara is “a democratic and compromise solution that can serve as a basis for negotiations,” US Congressman Christopher S. Murphy said in plenary session at the House of Representatives of the US Congress.
“Morocco has a compromise proposal on the table: democratic autonomy for the Sahara region under Moroccan sovereignty,” he said, recalling that the American administration described this initiative as “serious, credible and realistic.”
He stressed that it is important for the region’s residents to be able to express their views on their future, and for negotiators to take those views into account. “it is time for all parties to negotiate in good faith,” he said.
“We are witnessing monumental changes in North Africa (..), it is in the interest of the United States and the parties involved to achieve a peaceful, negotiated solution to the Sahara issue,” Christopher S. Murphy underlined.
The Moroccan proposal was strengthened by HM King Mohammed VI’s constitutional reforms “that serves the many needs of all citizens of Morocco,” he concluded.
