Rabat – The European Union (EU) welcomes the fact that Morocco has enshrined gender equality with regard to civil, economic and social rights into Article 19 of its new Constitution, the EU Delegation in Rabat said on Thursday in a statement on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
“In its cooperation with the Moroccan government, the EU supports the promotion of gender equality in all its programmes, including healthcare, education and literacy. It aims to continue its support for the Moroccan government’s reforms within the framework of the Government Agenda for Equality,” the statement said.
As a “privileged partner of Morocco, the EU will fully support all significant progresses in this area to establish these constitutional rights”, it said.
The statement underlined that ionequalities between women and men persist in most countries, politically, economically and socially, and that women suffer disproportionately from poverty and its negative consequences, such as malnutrition, poor health and illiteracy.
In this connection, the EU insisted that the promotion and protection of women’s rights are a priority for it in its bilateral relations with its partners such as Morocco.
