HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) Federal investigators say they have broken up a Connecticut-based scheme that arranged fake marriages between people in Morocco and American citizens.
The U.S. Attorney’s office says the marriages were set up to allow the Moroccans to come to the United States. Ten Connecticut residents were arrested Thursday.
The U.S. citizens allegedly filed false paperwork with immigration authorities claiming they had been in long-term, online relationships before traveling to Morocco to meet their future spouses. In exchange for entering fake marriages, authorities say the U.S. citizens were given money and trips to Morocco.
Prosecutors say at least one defendant never saw her husband after their May 2008 marriage in New Haven.
Half the defendants have addresses in West Haven and the rest are from Waterbury, New Haven, Madison and Bridgeport.
